This thesis calls for a shift in consciousness that brings back the idea of sustained relevance that has been traded in for the thrill of the latest and greatest new product. Burgeoning trends in areas like fixing and DIY call for a response by designers to re-imagine the objects and consider the opportunity for expression, character and dialog that can only be cultivated over time and duration of use. Her time at Pratt has given Sara a belief in design's potential to initiate positive change, and create meaningful relationships between the objects, environments and people in our lives.

sara@saradierck.com
now.saradierck.com

Advisor: Fred Blumlein

Li-Rong Liao

Structure and pattern are greatly applied in everything around us. As a discipline that has never been fully defined, we want to explore what it means today. In the past, industrial designer primarily meant being the Maker of Things, but now, the definition has expanded to include the Solver of Problems. The big reason for this change is the need to manage consequences. On the horizon lies change, and designers with a process in problem solving can take a large stake in this future.

With a background that merges art and business, David Kim has maintained Fortune 100 accounts, designed online social networks, managed a modern art museum, founded an experimental art/music/film festival, served as Creative Director for a non-profit organization, and started his own company. Immigrants from disparate cultures live side by side enriching street life with their native cultures, but have little opportunity to engage each other, yet alone shape the public realm, the common ground where they could connect. We are doing better, but feeling worse. Even if we receive the best medical care, symptoms and routines concerning our treatment plan cause stress and discomfort to our daily lives. "Chronic Wellness" looks at ways to improve patient experience and simplify self-management of chronic diseases by integrating fun, familiarity and empathy into the medical devices that we are expected to use on a regular basis. The focus of the project is the younger age group: children and adolescents living with chronic diseases. By creating opportunities for people to embrace their situation from the beginning of their journey with their lifelong conditions, design has the power to improve compliance, make chronic diseases less disabling for individuals, and change the way people experience pain by replacing negative emotions with positive ones.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px;height:320px;"src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0W9ow89xOtc/TPbmSet2QXI/AAAAAAAAAAU/WxdIsRE4Hx0/s320/esinarsan.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545873196310741362" />Bio
Esin Arsan is a designer who grew up in Ankara, Turkey. However, the ability to be true to oneself early can positively affect the choices you make and the paths you take in life. ‘Sanctuary’ is about inspiring NYC teen girls to create their own space where they can be and express themselves freely, in the safety of their homes, although many share small spaces with family members.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_suL56pFLLSs/S7-yyydbudI/AAAAAAAAAu4/Y9q6GI7O1_U/s320/beth+blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458277859004758482" />Bio
Born and raised in Baltimore MD, Beth loves working to address the needs of people. Companies realize that there is an abundance of choice, which is why each strives to come up with the right equation to steal consumer's hearts. It is a culture, community, and a way of life. Design opportunity was found exploring the visceral connection (or lack thereof) between food and its effect on everyday life.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_suL56pFLLSs/S7_CXGdH-1I/AAAAAAAAAw4/vPOcWWzVK-8/s320/me+v-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458294975521880914" />Bio
A New Englander at heart, Joshua majored in Physics and Sculptural Art at Hamilton College, although neither career path tickled his fancy. The designer however is the first person to make the decisions that can lead to a more meaningful experience. From the moment a designer decides what materials to use, or what form the object should have, or how the object will be obtained he is deciding whether or not an object has the possibility to be meaningful. Nature’s forms show a cascade of complex rhythms and details. They have been quantified using fractal geometry, a relatively new branch of mathematics described by Benoit Mandelbrot in the mid-1970’s. The study of fractals provides an understanding of the order underlying chaotic systems. This project explores how it can be applied to design.

Bio
Su received a B.S. in Business Management from the University at Buffalo. What is it about these things that makes us feel joy, not just once but over and over again?

Aesthetics of Joy explores the intersection between design and positive emotion. The project draws on insights from neuroscience and evolutionary psychology to explain the universal, hardwired triggers of joy, and suggest ways that designers can evoke these in their work. These "aesthetics of joy" can be applied to the design of objects, spaces, and experiences to enhance our emotional health and well-being and create more moments of spontaneous delight in the world.

www.aestheticsofjoy.com

Bio
Ingrid gets her joy from simple pleasures, like sunshine, ice cream, and neuroscience. How does our work affect the way human beings inter-relate? Many products designed to facilitate socializing actually isolate us more. This thesis explores the need to change a mindset that has endured since the Industrial Revolution when efficiency became a prominent design standard. Fostering human interaction must become part of the contemporary standard if we want ideas like sustainability and eco-friendly design to reach their full potential, and can help counter-balance a tendency towards isolation today.

Bio
Allison got her BA in art and literature at the University of Vermont, and the Glasgow School of Art, in Scotland. Surfaces were designed that exhibit a color shift when in motion. A theory for designing color hierarchies that correspond to the motion hierarchy of the object(s) involved is proposed. It is shown that color placed on a human body can affect the way that one moves and behaves. These concepts of integrating color design with motion considerations are then implemented in the design of functional products for skateboarding.

Bio
After a life spent as a competitive ski racer it has been hard to slow my physical momentum.
